INT - -
THE SCREEN IS BLACK. Then, like a light at the end of the tunnel, we see flashes of video from somebody's camera. Some shots are from a birthday party and a barbeque. Then, on the last video segment, we see a TV come on.
The camera zooms out and we see MICHAEL ANDERSON, a normal teenager, in a frenzy trying to record a news broadcast. His cousin MATT DYER is filming the situation.
Mike, are you getting this?
Then the TV comes on and Michael stands back from the TV. A NEWSCASTER appears, looking as stressed as Michael. He talks about what appears to be a zombie outbreak.
We see Matt and Michael packing backpacks.
Matt and Michael run out of the living room and into their hallway. We hear snarls behind them as they try to run out their garage door.
The camera is on its side as we see Michael stuck in the doorway of the garage door, being pulled in by somebody. Matt tries to pull him out, but is unsuccessful. He picks up the camera and runs out the garage.
WE SEE two feet running accompanied with HEAVY BREATHING. We LOOK UP to see metal school doors up ahead. We eventually reach them. We LOOK BEHIND US to see about three people, growling and snarling, chasing us. The camera DROPS and we see the hands that previously held the camera fumbling with the doors. As the doors finally open, the camera tumbles, allowing us to see the three maniacs coming dangerously closer.
Someone, presumably our cameraman, picks up the camera and shuts the door, then locking it.
Back at EYE LEVEL, we see the maniacs banging and scratching on the glass, gnarling and snapping their jaws with an inhuman manner.
(out of breath)
Well…I…got in…now…how will I…get…out?
The camera ABRUPTLY TURNS 180 DEGREES to see FENTON MILLER, 13, a rebellious teen with the words 'I just might kill you' etched on his face. He is holding a baseball bat.
Are you one of them?
My name's Matt Dyer. I'm a film student here at Reinenger.
I asked if you were one of them.
No,…I'm not. Are there others with you? If not, I don't care. Let me in.
Fenton doesn't move.
I don't trust you. You'll let them in.
I don't even know what the hell's goin' on.
Fenton slowly starts to walk towards the door.
Besides, you're the one with the baseball bat.
As Fenton opens the door, Matt walks into the main hub of Reinenger Jr. High.
It's safe to come out now.
Six other students come out from the columns, halls, and staircases.
1) Julie: 13, Brown hair, Blue eyes, a mellow and cynical adolescent.
2) Tucker, 13, red hair, blue eyes: a sci-fi addict. He carries the Zombie Survival Guide with him at all times.
3) Nicole: brown hair, blue eyes: Julie's sister.
4) Joey: brown hair, blue eyes: a normal kind of student you'd expect to see at a school.
5) Sarah: black hair, brown eyes: same as Joey, except more confident.
6) Alex: brown hair, brown eyes: a rebel, plain and simple.
They congregate around Fenton warily.
We're practically all that's left.
INT - CLASSROOM - DUSK
The eight kids sit in an 'information circle' of chairs.
Can somebody please...just explain to me what happened.
You should already know what's happened. You're lucky to be alive this long.
Please, don't. I've already lost my family during this.
You're not the only one.
A couple days ago, the nuclear reactor up in White Sands exploded.
INSERT STOCK FOOTAGE OF ATOMIC EXPLOSIONS.
The virus...or whatever they were working on...escaped into the water system. It spread across the continent in a month. Whoever drank the water became infected with the disease and became those things out there.
While Joey explains what happened, INFECTED scratch and snarl at the doors.
JOEY (CONT'D) (V.O.)
There was no escape, except for us. This school has a separate purifying water system, so this water is clean. We've been here for two days.
Are they dead?
They have no memory, but they're still alive. But if you drink contaminated water, or get a bite or scratch from one of those things, you become one of them.
Are we safe here?
We could be.
I've been hearing on the radio that the National Guard was going to come through here. Shouldn't we make a sign?
It's doubtful. They could be those things outside.
I found some paint cans in the theater...and there's plenty of paper. It could work.
Fine. Let's do it.
EXT - SCHOOL ROOF - DAWN
The group makes the sign on a giant piece of paper. We time-lapse through this event and eventually it gets done.
INT - HALLWAY - MORNING
Fenton and Alex are explaining how they plan to set up the school as a livable place. Matt cranes over their shoulders to see the map spread out on the floor.
We are right here, towards room 210. Metal doors are placed strategically around the school here...here...and here.
He motions to points on the map.
Joey and I will close these two doors here while Tucker and Fenton get this door here.
Nicole, Julie, and Sarah will stay in the left wing with Matt.
They leave in a flash before they can say anything.
After awhile, they get up and help make the place safe.
EXT - COURTYARD/QUAD - DAY
Matt and Tucker are walking towards the Fine Arts building when Tucker stops. He walks up to a vending machine that carries different flavors of milk. He puts in a coin or two and presses a button. A can of chocolate milk comes out. He picks it up, opens it, and takes a swig. He spits it out after a few moments. He looks at the expiration date on the can and looks in disgust.
Matt starts laughing at him. Tucker wipes his mouth and proceeds to the next vending machine, which carries juice and soda. He makes a purchase and a soda comes out. He takes a swig of it and swishes it around in his mouth. He swallows it.
MONTAGE: We see the group go through various activities throughout the school, like playing games, reading books in the library, and other things. After awhile, we are back in the library, when Alex looks up.
Who wants dinner?
INT - CAFETERIA - NIGHT
We intersperse through shots of the survivors eating cheeseburgers and the like. They do things like talk, smile, laugh, and fling food at each other. We slowly DISSOLVE to an empty cafeteria.
INT - LIBRARY - NIGHT
We are back at the information circle. The group is discussing what their life was like before all this happened.
So where were you from, Nicole?
I came to Parker to visit my grandma with Julie. I was from Denver originally, then my parents split up and I moved here.
When word of the disease first broke out, my mom always bought me sprite. We never drank water for as long as the disease was on the radio. When people became infected, my mom brought me here and left me on the roof. I have a sign up there I made from materials. My mom never came back.
I'm goin' to bed.
Where are we going to sleep?
Here's OK with me.
There's only one exit.
How about one of the two-door classrooms?
I agree with Tucker.
Everyone gets up and goes to the two-door classroom.
INT - TWO-DOOR CLASSROOM - NIGHT
Everybody is in a corner doing different things. Some read books from the library, some sit in desks, and some are on the floor, just waiting for sleep to kick in.
Nicole moves towards Julie.
Do you think anyone's alive?
No... I'm talking about Mom and Dad...do you think maybe they're alive?
I don't know.
Nicole goes to sit next to Julie.
It seems like the world is falling all over us. Like we can't escape it.
At least we can escape it tonight.
But what about tomorrow?
I just don't know.
She looks at her sister.
And I'm sure you don't have to care.
They smile. Nicole goes to her area and goes to sleep: Julie does the same.
Matt is now on guard, filming all the way.
I just started my shift...so far there's nothing. Alex is on the other side. This is our third night in Reinenger...I think there's like...30 infected outside. At least we still have the eight of us.
Anyways, it's almost...
Offscreen, he checks his watch.
...4:30 in the morning. Our shifts are two hours long. After Alex and me are Julie and Nicole at 11:30 PM.
Matt takes a big breath.
...Nicole and Julie seem to be taking all this very well considering their parents could be out there, but we still have hope for them. Joey seems to be going off the deep end: he's been spacing out alot and could be going crazy. Fenton is already crazy. He never seems to leave the side of that baseball bat.
He takes another big breath.
Anyways, it seems kinda pointless to defend these doors. I mean, we would hear them if they came in. And I think they're going away now, 'cause there's less moaning.
Matt turns around to face Alex. He seems normal, but looks kind of nervous.
I'll take care of both doors. You look tired.
I was listening to what you were saying, and I kinda agree with you. Guarding these doors...seems like overkill. Besides, you need some sleep.
I'm turning off the camera. See you in the AM.
He turns off the camera.
THE NEXT MORNING...
Matt picks up the camera and surveys the scene. It is almost dawn and everyone is asleep.
Matt turns toward the doorway to the classroom and spots something: a water bottle. He turns toward a corner to get Fenton's baseball bat.
Matt runs out of the classroom and sees Alex limping away. Suddenly he stops.
Alex runs toward Matt, snarling and growling. He is one of them. Matt screams. The camera falls in a direction so we can see the front of the classroom. Fenton and the group runs out of the classroom and towards Matt's aid.
We are back in the classroom and the group is arguing. Fenton is cleaning what looks like blood off of the baseball bat.
Alex left the school around 6:00 last night. He told me to go to sleep and he would assume responsibility of both doors. I was stupid.
Yeah, you were, Matt! You let Alex leave the school with a contaminated water bottle! You were so stupid with that camera you're always carrying around. Get that camera out of my face.
Fenton shoves the camera to the side in anger and leaves the classroom. Matt picks up the camera.
What was his problem?
He's just tense. We've been in this room without much sleep, so it's natural for some people to get claustrophobic.
You call him claustrophobic. I call him nuts.
Alex was the one who was nuts.
Shut up, Julie!
Everyone just SHUT UP!!!
If we can just keep our heads clear, we can be OK. Just chill.
After awhile, Fenton comes running back in, terror on his face.
That little spaz let them in!
Everybody rushes to the door to look out the little window in the door: surely enough, infected are in the school. They can sense their prey, but they can't find it, so they are determined to find it.
Back in the classroom, everyone is worried.
Looks like we're stuck here.
Yeah, thanks to Alex the infected psychotic.
He was suffering from claustrophobia. You are too. It's perfectly normal for..
I'm NOT claustrophobic.
Let's just leave him alone. He's snapped just like Alex.
Do you WANT me to shove this down your throat?
Break it up! We don't need this right now.
We just need to figure out how to get those infected out of here.
We don't have any weapons. Looks like we're stuck here.
(sliding down the wall)
We'll have to wait it out.
INT - CENTER STAIRCASE - NIGHT
Many INFECTED are walking around in search of prey. They wander through hallways aimlessly, without direction, seeking for the prey that is not there.
INT - 2-DOORED CLASSROOM - NIGHT
The seven survivors have no lights on as to not attract the infected. The only way we are able to see is through night-vision on Matt's camera. In the four corners of the room are different activities.
Tucker is reading about a class two outbreak in "The Zombie Survival Guide" while Sarah and Joey listen.
Julie and Nicole stand guard over the two doors of the classroom.
Fenton sits in one of the corners wide-awake and holding his trusty baseball bat.
Matt is in another corner filming them through the camera.
After awhile, everyone starts to fall asleep. In a couple minutes, Joey, Fenton, and Matt are the only ones awake. Joey stands at one door while Fenton is at the other. Matt is in the center, filming.
We FADE to find everyone asleep. The camera is on the floor.
Suddenly, there is a BANG at the door. Everyone wakes up. The camera goes to eye level and looks at everybody. There is another BANG. Julie goes to see what is outside through a little wired glass window in the door. She tries to run away, but to no avail. The door opens and Julie falls down. Several infected run inside the room. Fenton hits some with his baseball bat. Nicole tries to save Julie but she loses contact with her as Tucker pulls her away. Joey tries to run away at the last minute but realizes what he must do. He pushes Fenton, Matt, Nicole, Tucker, and Sarah out the other door and shuts it.
INT - HALLWAY - NIGHT
We see the five survivors running down the hallway. Many infected chase them as they go. Sarah trips, falls, and becomes another victim. She joins the ranks of the infected.
INT - HALLWAY - MIDNIGHT
Fenton is seperated from the group. As numerous infected come lunging for him, Fenton readies himself. With baseball bat in hand, he screams out his final words:
COME AND GET ME!!!
And thus, Fenton dies.
ENDING #1: ORIGINAL (BLAIR WITCH) ENDING
The 3 survivors meet at the main staircase. After several tears, hugs, and handshakes, the survivors say their goodbyes and split up throughout the school.
Nicole is basically flinging herself to get to the fine arts building. The infected get in the courtyard by a small door on the side of the wall. Nicole reaches the fine arts building. In a blur of panic and fear, she manages to open the door to the building and gets inside.
Nicole runs inside and breathes a sigh of relief. Then she opens her eyes to see...infected. As she inhales to scream, we...
Cut to Tucker, who has decided to hole up in a closet. He is breathing erratically. He gropes around in the dark and finds a lone flashlight. As he turns it on, he spots a hammer. He picks it up (there is no other option but this) and brings it quickly towards his head. Just before it hits, he stops, realizing he doesn’t want to do this. Then the door opens, and a shadow encompasses Tucker’s figure. He is terrified. We...
Cut to Matt, still behind the camera. He is running towards an empty classroom, first closing a set of big metal doors behind him, keeping out numerous infected. He eventually gets inside a classroom and shuts the door. The camera is set down, so we only see Matt's legs in a crouched position. We can see a little bit of his head, his ears being covered by his arms. He is freaking out. We cut to him back out in the hall when he hears another BANG and a WHINING. He turns around to see the infected chasing after him. He runs towards the very end of the hallway when he stops to turn around again. The infected are closer. At this moment, we see some stairs. The camera drops and Matt runs for his life down the stairs. He speeds down them and turns a corner. As the film slowly runs out, we hear the snarling of the vicious infected, and footsteps coming ever so closer.
ONE WEEK LATER...
We see two government officials walk inside the school.
The government official is obviously filming this. He is at the place where Matt dropped his camera. He picks it up and inspects it.
OFFICIAL #2 (O.S.)
Take that camera into evidence. We'll view it later.
The government official is walking down the stairs. Along the hallways, we see the dead bodies of our seven survivors. But wasn't there eight?
The official turns the corner that Matt took. He sees someone standing up. It is Matt! Strangely, he doesn't respond to the official getting closer.
Kid, are you alright?
OFFICIAL #1 (CONT'D)
Finally, Matt turns around and we see his face for the first time. He lunges toward the camera, snarling and growling. The official is helpless. Matt hits the camera.
ENDING #2: SURVIVAL ENDING
Matt, Nicole, and Tucker reach the end of a long stretch of hallway. Tucker turns and runs.
Make for the roof!
EXT. SCHOOL ROOF-NIGHT
Our three survivors reach the point of their destination: the roof. They go outside into the brisk night air. There is a big banner that reads "Help Us!" that is spread out. The door that seperates them from the infected is barred and they wait...
THE NEXT MORNING...
We look through all the hallways of the school. There is nothing...then we see Matt, Tucker, and Nicole. This is where we finally see Matt's face. The trio walks down the final hallway to the main staircase. Still, there is nothing. No infected, no people, nothing. The trio walks to the entrence to the school...and walk out into the desolate city that is Parker, Arizona.
Matt Dyer died from exhaustion two days after they were able to get help.
Nicole and Tucker survived the incident in Parker, Arizona, and since then, both survivors have experienced night terrors and numerous therapy sessions.
They have tried for four years to give their story to the media. All attempts have been turned down.
The bodies of the other refugees in the school, including Matt Dyer and all of the infected, have been cremated and buried in an undisclosed location.
The actual cause of the infection was never found.
ENDING #3: CONFESSIONAL/INFECTION ENDING
Matt takes off down a hallway and hides in a closet. There are some infected around the closet, but eventually they go away.
It is now morning. Matt takes off out of the school and runs down a street. He is able to get inside the house and lock all the doors. He picks up the backpack he had earlier and puts some stuff into it.
Matt looks outside and sees a group of infected come down his street. He runs inside but we hear a cry of pain from him later on before he gets inside.
Matt climbs up into his attic and shuts the door. There is darkness until he turns on a light above him. He gives a short confession about:
He winces in pain and looks at his arm. It has scratches on it. He admits that he got it during the scuffle with the infected earlier and that he hopes that his tapes get out. He starts muttering to himself, saying everything's OK. He says he just needs to rest...and lies down, out of view from the camera.
