The Backstory
The Missing Teenagers (as of October 11, 2001)
Jason Schaeffer
Russell Davidson
Chris Davis
Sam Davis
They were hiking into the Black Plains forest to shoot a school
project about the only escaped inmate from Peaceful Meadows Mental Institution, who was:
INMATE 3607-8311: “CRAZY” CHRIS STEVENS
Chris Stevens was sent to Peaceful Meadows Mental Institution
for the deaths of 12 people in 1961. He was diagnosed with dementia and multiple personality syndrome (MPS). In 1963, he escaped
by faking his death and being sent to the coroner’s office. While on the gurney about to be put in the incinerator,
he dropped the act and killed the medical staff and the coroner. After making sure they were dead, he disposed of their bodies
in the incinerator. He grabbed what he could as a weapon and escaped through the medical personnel door and into the Black
Plains forest undetected.
When the asylum staff found out about his escape, a full scale
search of the Black Plains was conducted. The only hints of Chris Stevens they found were the skeletons of small animals.
The animals appeared at the edge of the forest for two years until they just stopped appearing. It was at this point “Crazy”
Chris Stevens was presumed dead.
38 years later, Jason Schaeffer, Russell Davidson, Chris Davis,
and Sam Davis hiked into the Black Plains never to be seen again. Two days after they entered Black Pines, Jason Schaeffer’s
sister Lauren received a phone call at 11:43 PM.
It consisted of her brother screaming for help and an older
man’s voice saying, “See them run, Lauren. See them scream.” The phone call then clicked…and disconnected.
Lauren immediately called 911, placing this call.
911: 911, what is your emergency?
Lauren Schaeffer: My name is Lauren Schaeffer…I just
received a phone call from my brother Jason and it sounded like he was being killed.
911: Are you sure that it wasn’t a prank?
Lauren: He’s been missing for a day, so I don’t
really think it was a prank.
911: OK, Lauren, we’ll send someone out.
Lauren: Thank you.
(END OF CALL)
The next morning the bodies of Russell Davidson, Chris Davis,
and Sam Davis were found inside Peaceful Meadows Mental Institution next to the skeletons of small animals and a broken VHS
camcorder, the VHS inside in perfect condition. The body of Jason Schaeffer wasn’t located until the next week, found
clutching a digital video camera. Further away from the body, a bag of videotapes and film reels was discovered.
A later autopsy found a tape recorder inside a plastic bag
in his stomach.
The coroner’s ruling of death was heart failure, with
a strange blood disease that made them bleed out the eyes.
The found footage of the four teenagers was sent to the University
of Texas in Austin and edited together in a coherent fashion. The footage was released to the families and afterwards was
locked up for four years. In 2005, the footage was released to the public.
Whatever was on the tape recorder was never found out, for
it disappeared along with Jason Schaeffer’s body. The room storing the body had bloody footprints leading out the room.
The case is still open.
It's the story of 8 junior high school students surviving in their school on the eve of an outbreak of zombie-type creatures.
Basically it's Dawn of the Dead meets 28 Days Later with Kids. Here's a sample from the script:
